The Impalements: My Favorite Brooklyn Traditon

I stumbled across the "Impalements" for the first time in 2010. I had no idea why anyone would impale dozens of jack o' lanterns on the spikes of an old iron fence. But it was absolutely marvelous to behold. So creepy. So bizarre. And the display just gets even better as soon as the pumpkins begin to rot.

If you're ever in town around Halloween you must check them out! More pics--and the full story--here.

Ooh. That's cool! At my old neighborhood, the one next to it would take a bunch of milk-cartons and put candles in them. It gave off that cheery yet creepy and mysterious vibe.

Haha awesome..best I ever saw was probably this deformed one with a lopsided grin. When I say deformed, I mean the pumpkin.

Pumpkin display tip: please note this does require some lumber, hardware, cordage, and "Christmas lights."

Take a nice two-by-two beam. Put an eyebolt at the "top" and nail, or better yet, use screws to attach, a shorter length of two-by-two at the bottom (a foot or a foot and a half works fine). String the post with the Christmas lights. You might want to make sure the cord with the plug comes out the top where the eyebolt is. Set matching hooks for the eyebolts in a patio cross beam. Carve a lot of pumpkins to taste, being sure to hole them at the bottoms as well as at the tops. Slide pumpkins onto posts. Using a lot of people, hang pumpkin posts by their eyebolts from the hooks. Plug in the lights. Depending on length, one post can support four or five gourds, but they'll weight a lot.

Don't forget to roast the seeds from the pumpkins!
