First of all, I think this would be a perfect setting for a Kiki Strike novel.
Second of all, has anyone ever thought that they could have possibly been built by aliens? Some people think aliens visited the Earth and helped ancient civilizations. Maybe they bulit the tunnels for something. It's possible.
I agree with both points. Aliens rarely get the credit they deserve.

Why is it that whenever an ancient civilization did something cool, we decide it must have been aliens? Do we have some kind of species inferiority complex? The Romans had indoor plumbing.
Bavaria...middle or eastern Europe, right? Maybe near enough to Pokrovia to visit...? I like the idea...

BTW, Kirsten, I was down in the Village for one of my trips with my Creative Writing Pre-college program! We were on a Writer's Walk and got to see where some writer's lived, wrote, and died. It was sooo cool! Also, Just wanted to say that I thought of you, Kiki & the Irregulars when I was there! Can't wait for the 3rd book to come out! :)

The Romans had indoor plumbing. The Minoans (who petered out after about 1200 BC) had plumbing. The underground qanats of Iran, and throughout the region, date back as far as 800 BC -- and some that old are still in use! Board games go back to 3300 BC (Egyptian) -- and those are just the ones we can find.
I'm with you on the whole "why Aliens?" thing. If they WERE aliens, they'd have put in shoring, support pillars, something to keep these from collapsing. Caves can be unsafe -- dug tunnels can be much more dangerous.
