No great Passover videos, BUT the family has had its share of Passover mayhem.

1. The marathon search for the afikomen (the "hidden matzoh") one year when the parents put it in a record sleeve (this was back in the days when vinyl ruled the music world).

2. The headbanging incident when two kids simultaneously dived under the dining room table to spot the afikomen duct-taped to the underside of the table.

3. The time we opened the door for the Prophet Elijah and the cat walked in.

4. One family friend prepares horseradish so strong it makes people who KNOW the stuff is extra strong cry. Never fails. Every year. You'd think we'd have learned.

That's one hilarious video. That made me laugh. A lot. My brother thought it was funny as well. I mean, who wouldn't?

And you have a good holiday as well, Kirsten! I hope everyone has a great time.

That's one way to give a child a phobia for the rest of their life! Oh, I just saw the movie Hanna, and it was awesome! It reminded me of Kiki Strike. Happy Easter everyone!!!

Just like anonymous I have funny passover stories too

1. One year my brother secretly put a crumb of matzvah in the afikomen bag. So when we were passing the afikomen around to eat everyone had a crumb.

2. This year our family friends made horseradish. I have never tried horseradish before so I took a big scoop and put in my mouth. It was the extra strong one so I started crying and I ran to the bathroom as fast as I could.

3. A couple years ago we hid the afikomen and when me and my brother found it we were surprised to see that the dog pooped on it. IT WAS DISGUSTING!!!

Hi Kirsten!
This is kind of an odd question, but what was the name of the font that you used for Kiki Strike's handwriting in Kiki Strike Inside the Shadow City and The Empress's Tomb?
I am simply wondering because I have decided to make my handwriting as close to Kiki's as I can. (Disguising my handwriting or changing it completely is one of my talents.)

P.S. Thanks for writing such great books, I love them. You should write a 3rd Kiki Strike book after you've finished with the sequel to the Eternal Ones.

Dear Anonymous and Nada:

1. Passover is a Jewish holiday celebrating the Exodus from Egypt. For an ecumenical reference point for Christians, the "Last Supper" was a Passover Seder (meal).

2. The Afikomen is the traditional last food for the Seder. It sort of doesn't sound like a Hebrew or Yiddish word, because apparently it's borrowed from a Greek dining term meaning the last bit (or dessert). Adding to the fun, there's also a tradition the afikomen is hidden from view. Then, the kids are dispatched to find it. The lucky child who finds it is paid a ransom (in my family an Eisenhower, Susan B. Anthony, or Sacajawea dollar coin is the going rate) for it.

3. Horseradish, or the "bitter herb" is a traditional element of the Seder, reminding us of the bitterness of the Egyptian Captivity. The apple jam (although one of my Grandmother's friends swears it should really be make from dates) is to remind us of the mortar used in slave labor construction projects. The salt water: Tears.

4. Matzoh is a a flat-baked unleavened bread (think BIG crackers), as the Israelites on the run didn't have time to let their bread rise, but just baked it immediately.

5. As for a full and complete explanation of Passover and its many, many traditions related to food, questions and answers, and reclining while eating, that'd take forever. Perhaps your local library might have a book about Passover.

Happy Easter Holiday!

My Easter was lovely- after walking around a crypt I visited some family friends I havent seen in years and then sat in traffic for five hours.

Oh and i finally got around to reading the Eternal ones. I like it- very interesting and well written. But, Haven lacked that innovativeness I have come to admire in your characters. She seemed weak. I truly did enjoy it though, but she seemed weak in her morals- though that may be my catholic upbringing speaking. Also, I found it disturbing that Iain got her drunk before, er sleeping with her- even though she had specifically said no more than once. Just my opinon but GREAT book!

Oh, and I love Beau! he's my favorite character.

Thanks Robert i Really didn't know what passover is and i didn't even now what good friday is before we learned about in class because i am not jewish or christan. But that doesn't mean i don't like othere religons i belive that everyone should be any religon they want to and belif in hwat they want to. I just added that because i had a world history teacher who acts like her religon is the best and that everyone should convert to her religon. I dont like that kind of aduttude so i didn't really like her as a teacher. but its just what she belived it doesn't affect me so yeha.
welll bye

MC: It's interesting . . . I don't find Haven weak at all. She's not Kiki Strike--she's an ordinary girl who finds herself in a rather unusual situation. I think we'd all be a bit flummoxed if we found ourselves in her shoes. But look at what she manages to do by the end of the book. And as for the racy-stuff, that's why I never recommend the book to people under 14.

I'm not sure if our morals really apply in Haven's world. If you think about it--she's 2000 years old and has been married countless times. She's not your ordinary teenager. As for the getting drunk . . . I don't remember her being drunk at any point. And I didn't intend the scene you're describing to be interpreted in that way. It would go against everything I believe as a woman. Saying no much earlier in a relationship isn't the same thing as saying no at the moment things start to happen. I think there's a pretty big and important distinction.

I'm really glad you like the book, but I wanted to clear up that point.

Kirsten Miller said...

OK, I contradicted myself. I blame too much coffee! She's an ordinary girl in some respects, but extraordinary in others.

MushroomCloud said...

Sorry, I guess it came off a bit wrong. And your completely right, she is a normal girl which I guess is why she seems weaker when compared to the Irregulars. Rereading it, I think you're completely right that she is definitely strong in certain points. Also, she is technically married and 2,000 years old. I stand corrected.

Oh, and anyone hear about the 500 or so Taliban guys who escaped from a max security prison in Afghanistan (I think) by digging a half mile tunnel? Even if I disagree with their motives, I gotta give them some credit!
