Was a Time Traveler Captured on Film?

A man in Belfast claims to have discovered something rather remarkable in some old movie footage from 1928. A woman appears to be speaking into a cell phone. (And no, there weren't any cell phones in 1928.)

Check out the footage below. It's clear that she's clutching something small and rectangular in her hand. And she seems to be speaking into it. (Watch the whole video for slow-mo and stills.)

Here's my question. OK, let's say she's a time traveler. Who's on the other end of the phone?

I think an obvious explanation has been ignored. She's an alien.

I read about this online yesterday. It certainly is very interesting, and I would LOVE to believe that time travel does exist. But if it did, what would the consequences of our travelling be? We would mess up the future as we know it through every little action in the past. (Like in a story by - I believe - Isaac Asimov). Very interesting...

What was it?

:0 !!!!!!! whoa! cool! but she coulda been talking into a radio or a walkie talkie, or some sort of recording device. . . .right? well it probably woulda been bigger, and im not even sure if they had those in 1928. i dunno, i could probably think up lots of theories. its a hobby of mine. (i think it also kinda makes me paranoid, but whatever-better safe than sorry.)

My first thought was that she's listening to a radio and talking to herself.

Did radios come that small in 1928?

weird but not strange.

Me being a Doctor Who fan, I naturally freaked out when I saw this video. If timetravel DOES exist, and it exists like it does in Doctor Who, then time is never set in stone, meaning that every timetraveler is capable of changing the past/future, which could result in universal catastrophe when in the wrong hands.
[If the timetraveler is a Time Lord or Time Agent, then I guess we're all gonna be fine. XD please excuse my possibly confusing Doctor Who references.]

did anybody notice the thing that moved behind the person as she pasted the zerbra?? I don't think it looks like a woman though....

If that woman really is a time traveler talking on the phone, then time machines will be invented soon considering the size of the phone /shot

But that's soo cool!! X3

i agree with montana irregular, doesn't look like a woman and I saw the thing behind it. Also, around 50 seconds, it turns to face us and then a person passes and the person hasn't moved but it isn't there anymore... and it cant be a conventional cell phone- no cell towers

I think people said it was a hearing aid.

OMG its sooo cool my reading teacher stopped class and had us watch this video and think of ideas of why and wat she was holding!!!!!

My dad says she's a schizophrenic, but I personally think that this reminds me a lot of Doctor Who! I love Doctor Who, and I was almost expecting to see the tardis somewhere around in the picture. Haha. (:

Hi! Maybe she's speaking into a box she's holding up to her ear because she's checking a hearing aid. The electric ones (as opposed to ear trumphets) were not the little ones that fit into ears nowadays.

Note: I didn't come up with the "hearing aid" idea on my own. I heard that from someone else.

I just read an essay on what time travelers should carry to pay their way this month. For carrying stuff BACK to the present, the author suggested "lost" dramas by the great Greek playwrights -- and hope you didn't grab a copy of one of Sophocles' stinkers. Of course, his target time-frame was Imperial Rome.

That's awesome. I'm pretty sure there's a reasonable explanation and I'm going to spend the next few days thinking of one, but until then, THAT'S AWESOME. ;D

I don't think it's a cellphone, because there's no way to get cell reception in 1928. It might be a cellphone-like device that lets her talk to people in the future, or if she's an alien, she might be communicating with her home planet or other E.T.s

oh and i just relized i said pasted.... SMART ME!! LOL

I agree with you, Kirsten. That is DEFINITELY not a woman, it's an alien. She walks and her head doesn't move up and down, she's a really weird shape, and her face is just creepy...

There's a slight flaw to this movie. The shots are from a bunch of different angles. How would that work...?

It reminds me of that creepy dude from meet the robinsons

Interesting. Have we considered that perhaps it's a normal cell phone, and that while *the public* didn't have 'em then, who knows what the military or whoever might have been up to?

@Kenzie: Where time travel is concerned, I tend to lean toward the theory in Artemis Fowl, Harry Potter (though it's not explained well) and The Red Queen's Race: if it happened, it happened. No multiple timelines. If you think you changed something in the past, don't panic--whatever you did must have contributed to what really happened. (And I'm not explaining this well either.)

Oh, FINALLY! Someone finally sees this was one of the Doctor's companion!!! Go 355!

I love you guys who watch Doctor Who. (just for the record.)

Hey Ananka-Kirsten, where did you find this video?

Patsee said...

Haha. Nevermind. Upon doing a spot of research, I've found its origin.

And I would like to add that I find nothing odd about the way she walks, and to the commenter who said that she disappears, I'm pretty sure that's just the clip fading back to the beginning to be repeated.

My theories:

1. She has swimmers ear, or was at a high altitude and is trying to pop her jaw

2. Hearing aid

3. Fixing an earring

4. Time travel. Thats my favorite.

Or maybe she has a hereditary jaw issue like me. =]

I found the quote! "Ah, yes, the trusty time paradox. If I go back in time and kill my grandfather, then shall I cease to exist? I believe...that any repercussions are already being felt. We can only change the future, not the past....If I go back, then I have already been back."

THESAMEANONYMOUS said...

I agree with The 355. It's so obviously the Doctors companion. River Song, maybe? Also, Hi, Ananka! sorry its been so long since I commented. I'll be better now!

This was great inspiration Kiki I'm trying to write a book there is alot of time travel in the plot this will probably show up somewhere in there :) * *. =D

Theoretically (Obviously) if you went back in time it would already have happened, and if you changed anything it would already have changed, and therefore wouldn't effect the future.

Think of it like this: I you killed your grandfather (why would you want to do that anyway?) before you father was born, you would cease to exist, and would not have been able to go back and kill him, so you would exist, and could go back... and so it continues. Endless circle of confusingness.

So, I agree with EQ (and Artemis Fowl, who was quoted). You can't change the past, you can only change the future.
