OK, so this is the
National Geographic photo of the day, and they'll probably hunt me down and riddle my body with elephant tranquilizer darts if they find out I posted it.
But I just had to ask . . . Do you find horseshoe crabs as creepy as I do?
I've heard hundreds of thousands of them swarm certain beaches in New York Harbor every spring. I gotta go see that sometime.

wow thats alot of hourseshoe crabes. Now they freake me out too.:)AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
CRABS freak me out.
On a single biology trip (sophomore year) to Florida, we were accosted by like eighteen billion of them on a beach where we were supposed to be finding live sand dollars. A girl in my group actually ran up my body - stepping on the back of my calf - climb onto my shoulders and scream in my ear. The beach had looked empty -- and then suddenly there were TONS of tiny, tiny crabs... that looked way too much like spiders.
So, we were traumatized. And then went back to where we were staying... where there was a horseshoe crab stranded in the canal/drainage ditch thing out front. They sort of hump along - legless and hard carapaced -- and -- ugh. It freaked us the rest of the way out.
All in one day.
Cool
Well I live in a land locked state so horseshoe crabs don't freak me out as much crawdads do :o
They have those crabs in the New York Aquarium near Coney Island. I touched one once, it scuttled away. That was one of the most bizarre moments of my childhood.
but they're soo CUTE~~ >w< Especially when you hold em up close~~ *heart*
OK, OK, OK: for once something on your blog that i know VOLUMES about!!!! in 7th and 8th grade, i was a part of an environmental group that took a trip every year to the delaware bay to study them & help them & study them! (yes, we did A LOT of studying.) honestly, i first joined the group to miss some school, but i learned a lot! We'd be stuck on a beach at high tide, close to midnight somedays, and we had to survey them (like, count how many of them there were, since they're endangered) it was a TON of fun, and they're really not so bad once you've spent 4-5 days at a time with them on zero sleep! i kind of think they're adorable! i even put one on my face....sooooo awesome! if anyone has any questions about these awesome things, just ask!!!!!!! (even though it's your blog, kirsten.....sorry.)
ps- in japan, there's a legend that they came from the spirit of a samurai....that's mostly why they're so interesting to me hahaha. but they are strange when the try to hump your leg.....yeah, that really happened to me.
Yes, horseshoe crabs are very freaky. They're almost as bad as spiders D:
do they come like that around monterey??? they kinda remind me of centipedes, for some reason..............i might have nightmares tonight.
now, if those were baby seals, i would be happy.
Kira: Do Japanese horseshoe crabs look any different from the ones we see here in the US?
gah.
gah.
gah.
gah.
gah.
i could go on and on.
but why would they shoot you with elephant darts?
and why do some people like them?
i havent got much of a problem with ghosts, or scary stories, btu things like this are absolutely terrifying.
probably shouldnta said tha, but too late now!
kitty- you are so awesome for thinking that!
kirsten- yeah, they have more defined pointy areas (it's kind of hard to explain), so that if you turn them a certain way, it looks like a samurai helmet! the easiest way to say it is, the ones here are more curvy, the ones there are more pointy.
I love horseshoe crabs! They're so cool . . . but I suppose they are a little weird, too. :P
I think I would run away, screaming if i saw one.
Now they freak me out!! o_O
Kirsten, I think you might find this article VERY interesting.

They are creepy! They look like helmets, or little tanks..
I actually think they are sort of cute...
Dying by tranqulizer darts would be an unfitting end for you, Kirsten.
they creep me out so much!
i remember in an earlier post on this blog you spoke of something else (with a photo) that had washed out of some drainage area and they couldn't identify what it was at all but it was a bit similar to one of those things.
I raised some for a while... On the West coast. The emperor of the crabs and my marine biologists will probably now hunt me down and make me tranq you.
They have them at the maritime aquarium. Having spent the greater part of my childhood there and having touched them on many occasions, I will gove you my verdict. They are scary, but not as scary a chickens.
I love horseshoe crabs. They're so different from the other ones, which makes them more awesome.
Hm. Death by editor. Ironic.
As for the crabs--I have yet to find a crustacean that could be described as cute. Except in cartoons. But these guys take creepy to a whole new level...
ugh... Their creepy!!!
