Cute and Strange

In parts of the world (like Northern Russia) where the sun disappears in the winter, kids are given UV baths. The ultraviolet light from the lamps helps the children's bodies get vitamin D--a nutrient that would ordinarily be provided by the sun.

And it makes for a super-cool photo.

Oh, how ironic.
In Australia, we have the highest rates of skin cancer (melanoma). Aussies love the sun too much!

I hate to think of them just... standing there. Someone throw those kids a beach ball!

Isn't it usually cold in places where the sun goes down (and stays there) for parts of the year? If so, wouldn't the kids be freezing their little butts off standing in the living room in their underwear??!

Im glad I dont have to stand in my underwear.

Is it only young kids that get the bath? At what age do you stop getting it? And why don't adults get the bath, are they healthy enough?

Now that just can't be good for you

Reel Dancer said...

you know humans who live in that area survived for hundreds of years without that kind of stuff. so why can't we now?

Reel Dancer said...

yeah artificial light a very bad for you!!!!!! this is full of problems

Clare said...

I read that artificial tanning (at least what people do the U.S) increases your risk of skin cancer by 70%. So yeah Reel dancer, that probably isn't very good for you, and it is probably pretty awkward as well...

Clare and Reel Dancer: That's true when it comes to tanning beds. But not getting any light can be pretty bad, too. Look up rickets on wikipedia.

In ELA last year we watched a fic. movie about kids on Venus. The kids had to use 1 of those because the sun only came out like, once every 8 years
