Attack of the Sea Snot

Okay, folks. Time to do something about the environment. Thanks to warming sea temperatures, the Mediterranean is now being invaded by giant blobs of sea snot. Called "marine mucilage," the nasty slime balls (which can reach 125 miles long) are teeming with harmful viruses and bacteria. They've also been known to engulf and smother innocent marine life.

So if you've been waiting for a sign that you need to take action, consider this it!

It might actually be cool if it wasn't full of bacteria.

Water mucus, water boogers, and the blob team up to create worlds most disgusting substance!

I thought the video ended oddly. The narrorator was like "..Smothering life at the bottom" And then there was a cheerful trumpet fanfare.

this has nothing to do with the post, but who cares. all i have to say is that it was pouring here in in california. plus there was a wind. i go to a charter k-8 school, so we only have portibles as classrooms. i don't think one person in my class was completly dry for one second. i envy the lower grades. they got to stay in (and dry) praticliy all day.

...Sea snot? Where's it come from??? The video was a bit disturbing. The narrator was all "This is so terrible and sad!" and then the music is all "Do do do do do do do! We're happy about this!" I mean, that's just not right!

That's gross! But did you know that in 16 years their will not be enough fresh water for the MAJORITY of the population? And converting salt water into fresh water isn't worth it because of the cost and machinery needed.

What's better than steampunk, cake, and giant squid?

The answer is nothing. Which means this cake is awesome.

How can this be known to be caused by global warming when it's not even clear that global warming is happening at all? That doesn't make sense. Besides, there are animals living in it. Who says the old animals are more important? Something changes (e.g. sea snot appearing). Some animals adapt. Some animals die. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Kirsten Miller said...

Hazel: I disagree, but that's not the point, cause I'm not a scientist. However, I think it's safe to say that cleaning up the environment is important no matter where you stand on the debate. It's our job to take care of this planet. I'm pretty sure that toxic balls of sea slime were not what anyone had in mind for the Mediterranean.

Hazel said...

But I mean, how do we know we caused it? No one would freak out if suddenly there were more of some sort of previously endangered fish, but who knows what that might do to the food chain, and hence, the entire ecosystem. Why is this "bad" when other things that harm animals (like, say, other animals) can be "good"? Because it can harm humans? So can all sorts of animals, even endangered ones people try to protect, so presumably it's not that. Because it didn't used to to be there? Neither did we. Because it's "gross"? So are we.

Hazel said...

I'm sorry, I realize now I may have sounded hostile; I didn't mean to. I'm just confused.

We should take action. DEATH TO SEA SNOT!!! Who wants to come? Anyone? BYOC. Bring Your Own Coca-Cola.
