Questions? Comments? Lavish Praise? Send Them All

Hello! It's been a tough couple of weeks, but I'm back! I must admit--I haven't been reading the comments as thoroughly as I usually do. So if you sent me a note or question via the comments, I probably didn't get it. Sorry about that!

So, here's your chance. For a limited period of time, I will answer any questions posted in the comments section of THIS POST. (Within reason, of course. There's certain information that the government won't let me reveal.)

UPDATE 8-4-09: This has been fun, guys. But I'm afraid question time must end. I must go write a book or two!

When do we get a new Ananka book?? (Hey, you volunteered!)

How do you say "Ananka"? I've been mispronouncing it Anaka (like Anakin, but better), but clearly there's an extra n in there.

Kirsten Miller said...

Not for a while, I'm afraid. I was working on another book (not a Kiki book), and I'm still finishing Kiki #3. But I PROMISE it will be worth the wait.

It's pronounced: Ah-nan-ka.

Questions: Is Kirsten Miller your real name, or a pen name? Do you have the story line completely planned out? Have you always wanted to be a writer? If not, what did you want to be? Where do you find all the odd news for your blog?
Comments: I like seeing the Kiki books in the library. :] I can tell from the books that you enjoy writing them. (Am I right?)
Lavish Praise: I love the idea of the Shadow City. I like Kaspar. I like your writing style.

*as twelve years of Mama's training kick in* I forgot--thank you for answering questions!

Answers:

1. Yes, that's my real name. I did consider employing a fabulous pen name, but I think pen names are probably a lot like tattoos. They may seem like a good idea at first, but they get old REALLY fast. (Allow me to anticipate your next question. No, I don't have any tattoos.)

2. Yes, I always have my books plotted out before I start writing. I hate writing outlines more than anything, but it's the only way to keep my head from exploding.

3. I wanted to be an archaeologist. Who knows--maybe I'll be one some day.

4. I procrastinate by surfing the Internet, so I find lots of cool stuff. But lately I haven't had as much time to surf, so there have been fewer posts. (I'm hoping that changes soon.)

Thanks for the lavish praise!

Hi! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the series and think it's one of the best series ever (there's your lavish praise) but i have a few questions..........is this new book going to talk more about Deedee? She's my favorite character. (besides annanka & kiki) And (here comes the boring question) what's your favorite book/author? ps-you don't need a pen name. normalish names like yours create as much an heir of mystery as odd names like lemony snicket. Thanks!

she who must not be named said...

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would that be? (or would you simply stay in that fabulous city you're in?)
Where did you get the brilliant idea for Kiki?
What's the not-Kiki-book? (or is that classified information?)

Random: I was at the International Spy Museum in DC last week and it was AWESOME!! I mean....lipstick pistols, dog doo microphones, watch cameras, bugs hidden in picture frames....what more need I add?

Kirsten Miller said...

Kira: DeeDee will certainly be in the next book (they couldn't do much without her!), but Kiki#3 will focus just a little more on Betty. My favorite books are The Turn of the Screw (a ghost story by Henry James) and The Westing Game.

She Who Must Not Be Named: I think I'd like to live in Rome.

I got the idea for Kiki one day when a little park not far from my house caved in. At the bottom of the hole was a perfectly preserved room with no entrance. (The first chapter of Kiki #1 is based on a true event!)

The Non-Kiki book doesn't have an official name yet, but it's dark and dangerous and will be out next year!

Sharon said...

First of all, I love your books; they're hilarious. Hope there's many more to come!

Secondly,I was reading an interview and came up on an old contest to create Iris's portrait. Who was the winner? Iris isn't on the website yet...is she? (Sketching's one of my hobbies...I plan on making a few portraits of the Irregulars. I'm also an aspiring author/doctor/spy.)

Also... Any hints about that 'love triangle' you mentioned would be in the thrid book? I think it's Ananka's turn to find some romance...Haha. But that's probably a secret.

I know that's a lot of questions...thanks for taking the time to read them :)

I love your books!!!! My friend got me completely hooked on them, so if you're reading this Lindsey, thanks!
Will you let us know when Kiki #3 is starting to wrap up and you get any info such as release dates????
Please and thank you!!!

Will Kasper return!?!
He was one of my favorite characters but being that the next book isn't anywhere near New York i was kinda wondering.

BTW i am a big nerd, with a brown bob, green eyes, glasses and am the same height as Ananka, "Coincidence? I think NOT!"

Olivia said...

I'm from the UK, and I'm about to go on holiday to the states (tomorrow) an hour away from New York.

Do you have any places I should definitely pay a visit to, or are there any kiki strike events on?

and about a year ago, I ordered some Kiki Strike T shirts, you wrote a note, asking about the address, 'Wild Wilderness Barn'
I did some research and its named after a field next to my house, which used to have a large stately home on it. The foundations of the house are still there!

:):):) said...

AH we love you sooo much! You are the best author ever! Besides J.K. Rowling, of course! Just wanted to say that>>>and i know all of us are waiting for Kiki strike 3. We also know writing books is not so easy, so take your time and WE KNOW it will be worth the wait:)

Is there a title for the third kiki strike book yet???

What kind of music do you listen to??

~chanel~ said...

First, lavish praise just to get it out of the way. Kidding! I think your books are amazing and someday I hope to be a great writer like you. I know I will never be as awesome, but a girl can dream!

Second, comments. (I'm doing things backwards for some reason. Maybe it's Backwards Day in my little world known as Chanel-land, or maybe it's Chanelotopia? Idk. Don't you think there should be a backwards day? That would rock! Everyone would speak piglatin, and dress backwards, and drive backwards, and I'm babbling aren't I?) Sorry for the not-so-brief interuption! I wanted to say that once I clear off the top shelf of my bookcase and remove all my school junk which for some reason is still occupying it, it will be dedicated to only Kiki Strike. That is unless I find myself a new obsession which is highly unlikely.

Questions! (Finally!) A friend of mine e-mailed you about Kiki 3 and you replied. You told her what the title was and she told me. I will not type it here in case of some confidentiality (man that's a big word!) agreement that would end in my friend and I being hunted down by the government. But I must say, I love it and hope you don't change your mind! I wanted to know if coming up with titles is as hard as authors say it is. Do you mind enlightening your devoted followers and I about other titles you had in mind for books 1 and 2 (and 3)?

~chanel~ said...

Thank You Kirsten!!!! (I rudely forgot to mention that after my super long comment. Sry!)

Kirsten Miller said...

Sharon: Thanks!

The winner of the contest was Jin Ai, one of the most interesting people I've met in New York. I think we may have another contest of some sort soon.

The love triangle DOES involve Ananka. I agree--it's time she set her eye on someone!

Anonymous: I promise, you will all be the first to know when I'm given a date by my publisher!

Bea: Yep! Kaspar will return. Only half of the book is set in Paris. The other half is still in New York.

Olivia: I remember you well. Thanks so much for doing the research. So interesting!

I have lots of tips for people traveling to New York. I'll see if I can put them in a post soon. I hope you have a great time here!

:):):): Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Rebel: It's called The Darkness Dwellers.

I listen to all kinds of music. But I'll give you a tip. If you're ever on the subway in New York, play the James Bond Theme on your ipod. Suddenly everyone on the train will look mysterious and dangerous.

Hey kristen! Its me Amber StarGem!

I was wondering if your going to St. Louis anytime soon? Also do you sign books if we send them too you? Whats your favorite movie? Also what's your favorite series? besides kiki strike that is! Sry i'm asking so many questions i am just so curious! Lets see what else is there.... Whats your favorite somic strip? K i think thats it if theres anything else ill post again.

Kirsten Miller said...

Chanel: Boy, I am loving all of this lavish praise!

Yes, it can be VERY VERY hard to find the right name for a book. The Kiki books weren't that difficult to name, but settling on a title for my latest (non-Kiki) book has been absolutely painful! The Empress's Tomb and The Darkness Dwellers (no longer a secret, though it was when I told your friend) both take their names from things in the books, so the titles kind of wrote themselves. But I wanted to call the first book: Kiki Strike, Girl Detective. (But my publisher wasn't sure how many people would get the joke.)

AmberStarGem:

Hello! No, unfortunately I'm stuck in New York for the next few months. But I would be happy to sign some books for you. Just send me a note at kikistrike@gmail.com

My favorite movie: I LOVE Peewee's Big Adventure. I've watched it a million times. Tim Burton is my favorite director.

My favorite series: I quite like The Uglies series. Very original.

My favorite comic strip? I can't really think of a favorite. But I like to read graphic novels.

You are amazing, Kirsten!!!

How long does it take the entire process: From planning to publishing? and how long does the writing itself take?

I want to be an author, so what are the three most helpful and important things that you can tell or share with me?

Did you just start your writing career or did you go to college to study writing?

The Kiki books are my FAVORITE contemporary books and are tied as favorites with several classics that I enjoy.

Can you do a favor for me? Could you check out my blog. Especially this post:
http://insidecassiesmind.blogspot.com/2009/04/my-writing-class-critique.html
and let me know what you think of my writing style and technique? I'd love to hear any constructive criticism from my favorite author and to get a comment from you would be like a DREAM come true!

Thank you SOOO much, Kirsten! You're fabulous and one of my idols! LOL! My prayer is to write like you one day!

Blessings and eternal gratitude and thanks!
-Cassie

P.S. In real life, are you as dangerous as Kiki? :D

BTW: The International Spy Museum IS awesome! Defiantly the coolest place I've ever been!

Questions: I have always been amazed at the staggering amount of detail you use in your books. I know that some details are drawn from real life, like the underground room, Banksy's rats, and black hairy tongue, so my question is, when do you find the time to hunt down so many amazing literary goodies? :)

Comments:If you have ever even thought of maybe-possibly getting some film company to adapt your books for the screen, DON'T. They would screw it up royally.

Also, I myself, am a huge Tim Burton fan. This may go in the question category, but are you excited about his version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland?

And last, but not least...

LAVISH PRAISE!: I've known that I've always wanted to write, and with your books, I'm more sure of that than ever before. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer our questions! You rock!

Kirsten Miller said...

Cassie:

It takes FOREVER. For me: about a year to write (more when I had another job), about six months to edit, and about nine months to a year to get everything else in order. So all in all, usually around 2 and 1/2 years.

There's only one piece of advice I can give you. Sit down in front of your computer and don't get up until you have something great. Repeat that process about 10,000 times. The thing that keeps most people from writing (aside from lack of talent) is a lack of determination.

I will check out your blog. And yes, I am dangerous in real life. Very dangerous.

Nora: I am dying to see Burton's Alice in Wonderland. I'm just a little nervous, because some of his stuff lately has been a little hit-or-miss. (Like Planet of the Apes.) If he messed up Alice, I simply don't know what I'd do!!

As for the details, some people use their brains to cure terrible diseases or destroy the financial industry. I use my brain to collect lots and lots of useless information. And I read A LOT. Newspapers, magazines, conspiracy websites. You name it. The Kiki books are like crows' nests, filled with lots of interesting pieces I've picked up over the years.

Good luck with your writing, guys, and thanks for the lavish praise!

Cassie said...

Thank you so much!

Reading your comment to Nora makes me ask: Have you read 'the Book of Useless Information'? I think that it's something that you would like.

In what way are you so dangerous??? Or is it a deep, dark secret?

Sharon said...

Kirsten, you're a fantastic author. If I were you, though, my head would be inflated several times larger than it should be from all that lavish praise...But you're probably a lot more modest than I am :)

I was wondering if you could critique a funny piece (or two) that I wrote...don't worry; they're short:

http://www.writing.com/main/view_item/item_id/1565872

http://www.writing.com/main/view_item/item_id/1529352

The first one's the best, in my opinion, but I like them both...Thanks so much!

-did any of your characters write themselves?
-What genre of music do you like?
-who are some of your favorite authors?
-what do you think of some of the contemporary stars such as j.K. rowling and stephenie meyer and their works?
-are you going to add anything outside the modern realm of possibility (such as wizards, zombies, vampires, werewolves or other things?
-are you finished with The darkness dwellers and are editing it or are you still writing bits?
do you have plans to write any none kiki strike related books?
-do you know what's going t happen after the darkness dwellers?

Thanks!

Kirsten Miller said...

GinnyWeasley007: Good to hear from you!

Answers to your fabulous questions . . .

1. Iris. Hands down.
2. Oona is easy and great fun to write. She's so grumpy!
3. All genres. Except maybe modern country.
4. Michael Chabon and Wilkie Collins
5. I love Harry Potter, and I think JK Rowling is a genius. I enjoyed the Twilight series as well, but Harry has a special place in my heart.
6. Not to Kiki Strike. And not any of the things you listed. But I'm not opposed to exploring the paranormal in my books.
7. I'm still writing.
8. To the Irregulars? Quite a bit, but not everything.
9. No. Haha.

Sharon: I will take a look after I finish answering all of these questions.

Kikidee: My favorite food? Tuna fish sandwiches. Seriously. I make the best tuna sandwich EVER.

I have played with a Ouija board, but I don't think I broke through to the other side.

Scrabble. I kick butt.

Cassie: My Scrabble skills. Some people find them terrifying.

Hey Kirsten! It's me again! (I promise this comment won't be as long as the other one. Sry about that again... I don't want to keep you away from your writing magic!)

I was just wondering if you ever read this book called "The Downsiders" by Neal Shusterman. Kiki Strike is by far better, but "Downsiders" is also about underground New York. The plot revolves around the very first subway station and the strange people who make it their home. It was a great book but unlike Kiki Strike, it only had one explosion, and that's definitely not enough for me.

hi kristen!

just here to give some lavish praise and ask a question or two.

First I looove you books, the are right up there with Harry Potter for me, you are an awesome writer, I really want to write a novel some day, and I look to kiki for inspiration, you're amazing.

Thank you so much for saying what Kiki 3 is called, I've been routinely typing Kiki #3 in on google to see if there's anything new on it (I reading way to much, so I'm always looking for new material)

Now the questions,
a while on your blog you said you did a reading of kiki in NY, you said you gave a sneek preveiw of Kiki 3 at the reading, but would post a preveiw on your blog for those who couldn't go(like myself) did you ever post anyinthing of the sort? If you didn't could you please? It would mean the world to me,if its confidential I understand.
thank you!

Hi kirsten,

I love your books, their one of my favorite series, right up there with harry potter. I love your method of weaving together a bunch of diferent story elements and the making sure the get tied up perfectly in the end.

Just one question,
a while ago you said on your blog that you did a reading of kiki where you gave a sneek preview of the third book, you also mentioned you would post the preview on your blog, have you already? If you haven't could you please? It's okay if the information is confidential, thank you so much!
bye!

Chanel: I haven't read The Downsiders, but it sounds great. (Aside from the lack of explosions.)

Marie: I'd love to. Send me a note at kikistrike@gmail.com and we'll figure out the logistics.

Anonymous: I will try to post the preview of Kiki #3 soon!

And Keep up the good work, you're one of my most favorite authors!!!
Sorry for all the questions, but you asked for it.

Cassie said...

May I ask three more questions? I was just thinking ALL last night for things to ask you. I promise to lavish more praise if you want too... your books deserve it!!!

First, what do YOU look like?

May I email you also to request signed book plates for me and my friend who I showed your books to and is now as obsessed as I?

Last question: At what age did you start writing? I've been writing short stories and the beginnings of novels since I can remember and I was wondering if it was the same for you or was there a turning point in your life when you were like, "I should be an author!".

Thank you so much! I know that 'Darkness Dwellers' will be worth the wait and I shall be patient and will be looking forward to reading the preview of it!

It is so kind of you to answer my pestering questions. You're amazing and I hope to be an author just like you one day!

Blessings,
Cassie

Kiki can be a nickname for Kirsten; did you name Kiki after yourself?
Thank you again for answering our questions! You rock.

Patsee said...

I would like to know:

Have you ever had an encounter with a ghost? You seem like the sort of person who probably has seen one, but have you ever had one speak to you?

Being a writer, how strict are you in grammar when it comes to everyday conversation/writing?

Which syllable takes the stress in the name "Ananka"? I always thought it was the second syllable, but I never really know for certain, and in the past years+months that I've been reading your blog, I've never known you to specify.

How many days out of a week do you write? Also, how many pages per day?

Have you ever written any poetry? If so, can we hear some?

Lavish praise: I LOVE your characters. They're fun, believable, and consistent. And I love Betty, by the way.
-->Also, you have inspired me to build my own underground fortress someday.

Kirsten Miller said...

I will get to the latest questions in the morning!

Delaney said...

Heheh. If this isn't too late, can you answer this? Did you get an agent for your first book, or did you send it in to the slush pile?

Kirsten Miller said...

KikiStrike20:

The third book won't be out for a little while. When I know the date, I'll share it with everyone.

Yes, I loved to read when I was young. But I didn't really think I'd ever be an author. I guess I didn't really know WHAT I wanted to do until fairly recently.

My philosophy of God cannot fit in the comments section of a blog. ;)

My advice to aspiring authors is: Convince yourself you can do it, and never look back!

Cassie:

If you google image search my name, you can see exactly what I look like.

Yes, I would be happy to sign some bookplates for you! Just send me an email.

I've always written stories. But it took a while to have any confidence that those stories were good. Once I became more confident, writing got MUCH easier.

Nellie:

Tell Hazel she caught me. Yes, Kiki was my nickname for a while. A friend in college thought it was hilarious because I was nothing like her vision of a "Kiki."

Patsee:

Yes, I have. But I didn't speak to it. When I was a kid, I lived in an old house and from time to time I would see an old man leaning against my bureau. My mother described him to the lady who lived next door, and she nearly fell out of her chair. Seems I had been seeing the previous owner's husband, who had died in my bedroom!

Hmmm. Grammar. I wouldn't say I'm a world-class expert on the subject. But I do try to avoid making mistakes that would make me look dumb. (Note the sentence beginning with a conjunction.) I do find writing dialogue rather liberating, since few people speak like English professors.

The second syllable does take the stress in Ah-nan-ka.

Nope, never written any poetry. Maybe a limerick or two, but I suppose that doesn't count.

When you build your underground fortress, would you please invite me for tea?

Delaney:

It's a long story, but Book #1 was sent to my publisher first. When they showed interest, I picked up an agent.

Kirsten Miller said...

Sharon: I took a look at your stories. Very witty, indeed! (And there's nothing more difficult to capture than wit.) I love your tone of voice. And I like a fairy tale heroine with a little moxie!

Surprisingly little. Sometimes you have veto power (which you can exercise if you really hate a direction), but usually not more than that.

Clare:

It's a dark thriller/romance that is a bit more mature than the Kiki series. And no, there are no vampires in it.

I did once. I lived in Paris. And I can't tell you how happy I was to move back. Did you know you can't get a decent taco in all of France?

Whether for the new book, or the next Kiki, there's a good chance I might be traveling a little soon.

Yes, I will read your story, so send it along! (Though it might take me a little while to respond--so don't be discouraged.)

Comments: This is my FAVOURITE blog.

Questions: I don't know if you aill be answering any more questions, but I'll ask anyway...
-When will you come to Australia?
-Would you ever keep a chicken (or two) as a pet?
-Will there be ay new characters? (I'd really like it if they had some ethinic origion, like Ooona, because you learn about their culture)
-Can I post myself over to New York (I'll need to flatten myslef like Flat Stanley though...)I absolutely love NYC.
-Have you read 'Little Brother' by Cory Doctorow? It's an awesome YA novel, with heaps of code-cracking and computer hacking.
When will Iris be put up in the -Irregulars section?
-How can Kiki ride a Vespa, when she is *ahem* too short. Won't the police notice her?
-Will you use any French phrases in Kiki Strike 3?
-Will you be using the Invent a Gadget contest winner's invention in Kiki Strike 3?
-Will there be any new Kiki Strike t-shirts? Something in black...?

Thank you =)
I wish you a lot of success and happiness :)

I don't know why, but I have a feeling the cover of kiki 3 is going to be purple. Like I said, I don't really know why, but I just think that would go good with Betty. I know she's going to be on the cover, with maybe the Eiffel Tower in the background. That's just the vision I had of book 3.

Um I have a question. Do you have anytips on getting something published?

Kirsten Miller said...

Maddie: It doesn't have an official title yet. But it's a dark romance/thriller.

AmberStarGem: I'm not sure what color they'll make it. But I would imagine Betty will be prominently featured.

Quidditty: Sure, but it might take me a while to get back to you. I'm crazy busy right now.

Clare: Kiki's real name is in Book #1. (heh heh) Pokrovia is not a real place, but I borrowed the name from Pokrovka, a town in Russia where the graves of Amazon women were discovered.

Iris should go on the page, but I'd have to get someone to put her there for me.

Brave Chickens:

1. I've been to Australia, but probably won't be back for a while. It's a long trip!
2. A pet chicken in NY? Sure!
3. There will be French characters--is that ethnic enough?
4. Ha!
5. I haven't read Little Brother, but I've heard it's good.
6. I don't know about Iris. (See above.)
7. Kiki had her Vespa made to fit someone her height. And she's way too fast for the police.
8. Mais bien sur.
9. Yes! It's brilliant.
10. Maybe, but my printer's machine broke.

KikiStrike20: Sure. Send me a note at kikistrike@gmail.com

Kiwi:

1. Yep.
2. It's a state secret.
3. Reading your own work can always be hard. Nothing is ever as perfect as you'd like it to be.

Book Girl:

Thanks! It's called the Empress's Tomb

Sensei: AWESOME!!!

Amanda: I wish I could give you some handy tips, but my experience was quite unusual. Sheer luck led me to my publisher and that was pretty much it!

Ohh, an off topic comment, since I was reading about your titles and it reminded me... My very favourite book title ever!! is: The Top-Flight Fully-Automated Junior High School Girl Detective. (Also in the same series: The Active-Enzyme Lemon-Freshened Junior High School Witch.)

Perry: Child laborer, dental assistant, ad woman.

TicTac: I won't be adding to the Columbia Conspiracy until I can finish book #3!

I'd love to add Iris, but I'm not technologically gifted and will need to find someone to do it for me.

It might be! I'll have to check out your suggested actress!

Praise: KIKI STRIKE ROCKS!!!! lol.

This page answered so many questions, so can't really think of any. I can't wait for the 3rd book!
Would you really sign our books if we sent them to you?!
For a movie: I think it would be awesome, but... I mean I think it could either be an awesome teen movie that everyone will fall in love with. One thing I love about the book is that it is written first person and it is so clever. I mean Ananka actually talks to you and she also talks like a normal sarcastic teenager. On the other hand, it could turn out as a cool movie turned more for kids like oh we are going to go on a mission, which is not really my picture. lol Just some thoughts.

I visit your website/blog like everyday, but I don't always comment. I am looking for some awesome Kiki merch, I hope there will be more. Thanks.

P.S. KIKI STRIKE ROCKS!!! Hardcore fan right here.

I read The Westing Game last year and i thought it was really good. Can I ask one question even though question time is up? Will the third Kiki book be done before 2010? Or 2011?

Forrester said...

P.S. Can you put up an animated video thing for the book like you did for the first two? thanks.

Dear Kirsten-
*Begin lavish praise* The Kiki Strike series has been my cousin and my favorite series since about 2 years ago. We would email each other discussing how we could use the tips at the end of the chapters in real life, and have extensive discussions after each chapter. I find myself checking out the series every several months at the library because they are so much fun to read. *End lavish praise*
I do have several questions-
1.Do you like the Empress's tomb or Inside the shadow city more?
2.Were you good at English when you were in middle and high school?
3.Are you more like Ananka or Kiki do you think?
4.What age group did you write the Kiki Strike series for?

Though I am possibly one of the most impatient people EVER, I am willing to wait for the third book, and I CAN'T wait!

-Hazel (not anonymous's friend, a different one :D)
