Looking for a Good Way to Start a Book?

"Archaeologists are stumped after finding a 100-year-old Swiss watch in an ancient [Chinese] tomb that was sealed more than 400 years ago."

Got your attention? Here are a few more facts . . .

The tomb in question dates from the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), and experts believe it has not been visited since it was sealed shortly after its occupant died. Yet when archaeologists filming a documentary began to remove some of the soil that surrounded the tomb's sarcophagus, they discovered an unusual artifact caked in dirt.

It was an early 20th century lady's watch ring made in Switzerland (shown below). Inside a four hundred-year-old Chinese tomb. ("Experts" were quick to note that neither watches nor Switzerland existed four hundred years ago.)

In case you were wondering, the watch had stopped at 10:06.

I have to admit, this one has me baffled! Read the Daily Mail's report here.

That reminds me of this movie where this old guy traveled back in time and dropped his glasses somewhere and the son found them in the present, except they were in a tomb or something and seemed really old but they didn't exist when the tomb thing was sealed. According to my sister, the movie is called Timeline.

Watch ring=awesome. I would totally love to have a watch ring. :)

I have my theories.First: Someone manage to go back on time(unfortunately not possible...or maybe it is?#Twilight zone moment#). Second:Somebody did enter in the tomb before the experts and third: This is a very good prank.
Anyway this is really intersting=)

Changing drastically the subject:Kirsten when the Empress's Tomb will be translated to portuguese? I'm brazilian and I know people who want to read the book but can't and even the english version is sometimes hard to find.I'm the only person that I know who had read the book and I just manage to find it by luck.-.

TIME TRAVEL! Ha ha. :)

Thank you.By the way my sister who is a fan of the books also is asking why Iris don't have a simbol in the Meet the Irregulars's page. She would probably keep bugging me forever if I didn't ask you that.

Kirsten Miller said...

Isabel: Yes, Iris isn't fairly represented on this website! It's a shame. Next time I update the site, I'll make sure to fix the problem. And tell your sister I said hi.

"Watches were not around at the time of the Ming Dynasty and Switzerland did not even exist as a country, an expert pointed out."
ROFL *dies laughing*

Dahlia: I saw these really cool ones on the site for the gift shop of the NY tenement museum (don't ask)...I really wanted to get one because I need a watch but didn't feel like going there or paying for shipping, lol. (or for the watch, which was 18 dollars)

Jin Ai: Thanks for the site. I love the black and the purple ones. I used to want a watch from Hot Topic, but now I want a watch ring. :)

Also Dahlia: That movie seems interesting.

I want to be an archaeologist!!!

Dahlia: I once got a free ring watch from KFC kids meal, it was in another country though. And I was so dumb, that I washed my hands after my meal, with the ring on. And I never got to use it again. =( [I know that's not the type of ring watch you'd want, but I just thought it was funny^^]

Erm, before this I never knew watch rings existed! I'm so strange.

This sounds like an Out-of-place Artefact. Here's a link about this type of stuff. It's so interesting!

Wow, mysterious... Sounds like a good book in the making...

Ooooooh. A watch ring would be cool, but a zillion-year-old watch ring which logically should not exist would be even cooler! ^^ Maybe an archeologist was wearing it while he explored the tomb and it fell off but the exploration was unsuccessful and unrecorded. :P

The macine was almost finished the swet collected on his brow. I sat and watched as he tuned the last screw. A terrible sound filled my ears smashing my eardums into my brain. He yelled to me to run. I yelled for him to take my new ring to remember me, he ran over and snached it and told me he might not be back. I told him as long as he showed people that he had done it, he had gone back in time, he had acoplished the impossible he kissed me and said goodbye. That's the last time I ever saw him, the last time I saw my husband.

Kapuerajamman: Delicious! You must finish the story!

That is an awesome story. 100 year old watch found in a supposedly never opened Chinese tomb, I like it. But, It sounds more like a publicity stunt to me, or someones idea of a joke.

I eke with a start panting heavily. It had been a while since I had remembered what happend. It was still dark out so I pulled on my robe and slunk downstairs to the mavine with the sound of the gas heater filling my ears I stepped out of the darkness. There was saomething wrong the macine it was gone I ran to the big stain on the floor wondering how they could move something so big. They were Scorpio a company who would not leave me alone they were behind every corner in every sidewalk crack it made me shiver to think of their leeaders face burned when he and my husband worked togeather. His evil was so powerful it reached everywhere on the globe I could bat escape scorpio.

Kapuerajamman: this truly is a story with potential.
"And neither watches nor Switzerland existed 400 years ago, experts said." NOOOO.......... really?

Patsee said...

Time travel was indeed my first guess.

I must've read more sci fi than I remember.... =]

My more-likely guess is that someone entered the tomb, lost the ring, and re-sealed the tomb again...?

Perhaps that isn't more-likely.

Might I point out that "experts" don't necessarily know everything?? (case in point-the book "Unexplained" by Jerome Clark. Fantastic representation of the anomalies of the world.)
On a less related tangent, but one I, nevertheless, feel tempted to share, a New Hampshire man (a reputable outdoorsman) reported seeing a 9-foot, apelike creature. The game warden wrote the report off as the guy having seen a moose. Hmmm, let's compare: Moose-walks on four legs, Apelike creature-walks on two. Moose-six, seven feet tall at max, Apelike creature-NINE feet tall. And probably most importantly, Moose-has antlers, Apelike creature-stunning LACK of antlers. Therefore, how exactly does one mistake a moose for a 9-foot-tall ape thing?! ... Some experts are stupid.

Either it's time travel, or some forgetful archaeologist dropped their priceless antique watch ring while chipping away at the dirt. Hmmm.
