Dine . . . and Die!

Trifter has posted a wonderful list of the seven deadliest delicacies. Some (such as fugu, shown above) have already earned posts on this blog. But some may come as splendid surprises!

My favorite? The delectable "San Nak Ji" . . .

"San Nak Ji or live octopus is a popular delicacy in Korea and Japan. The enjoyment of eating this food is when the octopus is still moving with the tentacles sticking to the roof of the mouth. The challenge is to munch and swallow the live octopus without choking. It is reported that there are on average of 6 deaths due to choking (on live octopus), each year in South Korea."

The entire list, plus videos and pictures can be found here!

OH, GROSS!! But my mom says it's delicious. xD

oops. I meant, she says it's supposed to be delicious....not that she's ever tried it!!

That is both fascinating and disgusting.

I love it! (The list, I mean - not the san nak ji. I've never tried it.)
I think my favourite out of the 7 is the Ackee Fruit. Not because I know anything about it, but because I'm really interested in the medicinal properties of plants and herbs. I actually once made this "perfume" from some stuff in our garden that gave my mum a terrible rash and a headache. I felt so bad - it was supposed to be her birthday present.
But now I know the secret properties of too many combined herbs...
I promise not to use it for evil. ^^

Oh, and I've had cassava. xD I found this bread made out of it at the health food store.

Raph: LOL! I feel bad for your mom.

Ananka: I was looking through the archives, and I found this one: http://kikistrikeny.blogspot.com/2006/08/lesson-number-one.html
about Paris' Shadow City. Have you actually been down one of the manholes??

I think I saw that San Nak Ji thingy on youtube. There were these group of teenagers at this Chinese restaurant and this person dared his friend to eat the San Nak Ji. His friend ordered it and ate it. That was really REALLY funny. You shoulda seen the look on his face. XD It was like green. And I think that person puked it all out later. I feel sorry for the octipus tho. There's alot of gross scenes. Like... Never mind. -.-'

I remember the post about the Echizen jelly fish, but have you heard of the anime/manga Prince of Tennis? My friend really likes it, well the main charater's name is Ryoma Echizen. (he's named after a jelly fish!) ;P

Jin Ai: As a result, whenever I give her birthday presents, I test them on myself beforehand. In front of her.
Haha. I'll tell her she has a friend in New York. ^^

Raph: You still make your presents? lol. What kind of things do you make for her?

Raph said...

Jin Ai: Yep. xD I'm already a couple of years into my teens, and I still do it. I usually write her something - like a story, or the beginning of a serial. Plus a card, and I buy something too. ^^
My sister and I always make stuff. We've been doing it since we were... about 3. Our parents always say they prefer it to anything bought. So we oblige. (:

I always make my own gifts! I like to make little, funny books for people on their birthdays. It's sooo much better than something store bought.

Now that I've heard Raph's tragic (and hilarious) story, I won't try my hand at purfume! But how cool that you tried! I'm so impressed.

Kitty: Thanks for the mental picture! ;)

Same Anonymous: Awful, isn't it? Where did you hear about it?

Cupcakedoll said...

Aw, puffer fish are too cute to eat. So are octopi for that matter.

Urisihapai said...

risk your life for some food? i don't think sooo. It probably doesn't even taste good!

Tikurrui said...

I've seen that octo thing on fear factor before ._.

At first I thought that the dine and die thing was about puffer fish, since I know that they are poisonous even though Japanese ppl eat them anyways.
