The Rookie

Remember Tavi, the teenage fashion maven? I wrote about her last year, and it seems she's been quite busy over the past twelve months. Her influential fashion blog, Style Rookie, is still going strong. And she's just started her own teen Internet magazine. It's called Rookie, and it's pretty darn amazing.

I may not belong to Tavi's target audience, but she's one of my personal heroes. She's proof of what can be accomplished with brains, confidence, and a whole lotta moxie. As you probably know by now, the world is filled with cynics and naysayers. It doesn't matter how old you are--if you're going to do something fabulous, you'll have to put on a pair of funky dark sunglasses and pretend you don't see them.

Thanks to JAY for the heads-up!

I sometimes ride with a local club of extremely long distance cyclists. They occasional tell tales like the one about the "seventy-two year old rookie" who finished a 122 mile ride with about 6000 feet of climbing in less than nine hours. And the next year, he was FASTER.

Oh, one other thing about fashion as worn: The inertia of footgear choices. I'll see women wearing sheepskin boots and booties with their knickers/capris and tank top separates or sun dresses well into mid-August. Now, in the beginning of fall, everyone's in flip-flops or canvas sneakers paired with full jeans or full tights under skirts and the first knitted wraps and shrugs (and the occasional cardigan).

That's super cool! Go her!
Oh, and this is totally unconnected, but it's been over nine years (wow) and I JUST NOW picked up on the Alice in Wonderland reference in the first Kiki Strike book. Was it intentional? I love it either way!

Girl has amazing adventures after crawling down hole in the ground after something white and following written orders ("Open me") from people she doesn't know.
