ok, have fun. but a few questions. . . .what happened to the shadow city store? do you have a release date for kiki 3? and where will i get weird news now until you're back? hmm. well, i do enjoy reading the posts from a while back. they are still interesting. and there'll be lots of distractions too. . . .hope your weeks off are fun and not even a little boring.
haha i love festivus! "and as i rained blows upon him, i thought there must be another way! and that's when i cameup with festivus for the rest of us!" merry christmas, happy festivus, happy new year, all that good stuff! (i can't wait for next year because thats when kiki strike 3 comes out! i thought it'd never happen!)
Really Kirsten? You are going to abandon these poor irregulars for the rest of the year!? With nothing but a crumb of odd news to survive on? Think about it...
Anyone have fun/weird family or local holiday traditions they'd like to share?
On the first day of Hanukkah the "in San Diego" family traditionally invades a large bookstore, where we select books as gifts. And judging by the family menorah protocol, we're all pyromaniacs. Seriously, we had eleven menorahs in play, leading to a total of 99 candles on the eighth day.
My digital camera doesn't have an exposure setting for "indoor bonfire."
> Anyone have fun/weird family or local holiday traditions they'd like to share?
I guess we do. Traditionally, the first part of our exam session takes place the whole week before New Year. Luckily, I was able to pass the physics exam beforehand, and there are only four left… Anyway, getting through exams while others are having fun is weird indeed =)
holiday traditions? not really. . . .but my birthday is usually the last day of, second to last day of, or first day back from winter break. this year, its the second day back. so its basically like, "happy birthday! time to go back to school-you get to wake up early, do homework, and see all the freaks at your school again! yay!" yeah. happy birthday to me. thank you so much, teachers. :P and then they wonder why i'm grumpy.
the menorah bonfire/bookstore invasion thing is funny, though. my friend would have fun with that- she loves playing with candles and bonfires, and also loves reading. (though i doubt she'd think combining the two would be any fun. i wouldn't, either.)
Have an AWESOME Christmas! I'll miss your blog posts, but between my birthday tomorrow, Christmas, and new year, I'll be really busy anyway. Enjoy you're holiday, and have a merry Christmas!
ari the awesome: your birthday is tomorrow? well then happy birthday!! if you went to my school, your present would be getting a couple weeks off school. (dunno bout other school's schedules for vacations.) lot better than me, i get to go back to school from vacation for my birthday :(.
I'm getting The Eternal Ones for christmas and I'm so excited!!!!!!! I can't wait until the 3rd book of Kiki Strike is out, you have to tell us at least something about it.
i will miss reading your fun interesting facts while your away. how am i gonna spend my boring holidays now?
Book publishing is kind of like movie making -- the release dates have to be scheduled in advance so that you're releasing books all year. Even if Kirsten's done with Kiki Strike III, and that includes the editing, proof reading, fact checking, etc., someone still has to illustrate the cover, do the book design and page layout, check to make sure the computer didn't eat a page, send that to the printing plant, schedule the printing, schedule the binding, arrange the shipping and bookstore orders, AND ensure the publisher isn't releasing all their "Young Adult" novels with strong female characters all in the same month.
The bonus, despite the pent-up reader frustration, is some of these schedulers at the publishing company also arrange the book tours and in-store appearances.
Robert in San Diego, awaiting further announcements myself.
since i have nothing else to say. . . .best christmas song ever is father christmas by the kinks. its funny :). also, its funny if your brother is opening a present about the same size, shape and weight of an iphone box (and hes been wanting an iphone) and it turns out to be a piece of wood. (also makes you wish for a video camera.)
for my family christmases the children are given a box of matches and told to go make a fire- wait, no thats birthdays... ok on christmas we sell pagan children to one another and eat poisoned food to see what it'll do to us. its fun...
WHEN IS KIKI 3 COMING OUT???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Very insightful, Robert of San Diego. Made me think about how frustrating the book industry is. Ugh. Well, hope you guys had a Happy Holiday, and will have a Happy New Year! 2011 here we come! :)
when you're anonymous, it doesn't matter what you say. A frail voice in the background forgotten, shoved out of blithe reality into the damp rain. Another year means i will grow older, let time wither me apart. Another year means that you wake up knowing that time is so frail it might break. But then one day you hear the bells, and think it could be better, that the world just might go on spinning. Happy holidays my friends
I'm with Hazel. Kirsten needs a vacation as much as any of us. Also, with the short days (or long days if she's south of the Equator) she'll have more time to take her own advice and be mysterious.
Sigh. I guess it's not the new year there yet. I saw the midnight Sydney fireworks last night, and they were really cool. I'm sorry, though, to say my highlight of the night was the best cake I have ever tasted. I'm just that kind of person- a sucker for a good cake.
I hope you've had a great holiday Kirsten- I know I have.
happy new year!! i wish i had gotten to see fireworks, i missed them on fourth of july too :(. and i love them, theyre like a cross between explosions and twinkle lights. so pretty!! though somebody set off one on halloween. haha pretty
Ananka, did zou hear about the nig cave that just turned up in Vietnam? http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110103/ts_yblog_thelookout/explorers-discover-spectacular-caves-in-vietnam
A tradition my family has for New Years is to go out in the yard/balcony at midnight and bang pots to "bring in the new year." My mom claims that its an old Scottish tradition, but im 98% sure its a revenge on our next door neighbor for playing Bob Marley on High night before Halloween.

Thank you, anonomous. You're right, it is a pretty awesome gift to get two weeks off from school. Today was our last day before winter break. =)
I feel so sorry for that toad. Also, okay, happy holidays! :)

Jeez, people, leave poor Kirsten Miller alone. She has a life outside of this blog, including writing all those books you clamor for.
Noooo don't leave! D:
Did anyone else check to make sure their new 2011 calendar and planning book have the phases of the moon, or am I just weird about bicycling at night?
