Although I voted for McCain in our school election, (based on his prior military experience, how many bills he sponsored for animal rights, and the fact that *gasp* I like Sarah Palin,) I thought that Obama made an extraordinary acceptance speech, that reached out to all of America and beyond.Ohhh that little paragraph made me feel so smartical.

Lady Dahlia:I agree with you on the ads. I've gotten over 50 telephones in the last few days telling me to vote for this or that, but I don't agree with the unvoting thing. This is our future, we can't just expect everything to be OK. We have to fight for what we believe in. In my family it's praticly a sin not to vote, and my Science teacher threatened to disinherit his kids if they didn't register (register, not vote, fyi)
At school, for our election unit, I "voted..."...for "none of the above." But McCain won by a significant majority. My church-school is conservative/Republican. There's but one girl in my grade who likes Obama.quarguana: Me, too! I'll be less than three months too young for the 2012 election.

Undiscovered Universe: consider this- my best friend in the world was born secretly by a meth-addict who had just divorced her 3rd husband. her mom was also a smoker, drinker, and a nasty person. needless to day, my friend has been through all kinds of abuse until her father discovered her living malnourished in an apartment. her father wanted to adpot her, but her mother held gruges and didn't want that to happen, so my friend was put in foster care. she was so abused by one family, she stopped talking, and needed medical help. in one case she was starved. finaly, when she was seven, her mom lost in the legal battle, and she was adopted by her dad and step-mom, and had two new half-sisters and two step-sisters to live with. she hasn't seen her mom since. the point of this is that my friend was almost aborted. HER MOM DIDN'T WANT HER. nobody wanted her, and she's been through all kinds of horrors she's still recovering from. now tell me: do you think she was better off dead? do you think my best friend in the world, who has helped me with many of my problems, and is a loving christian, as well as a hurting soul, was better off dead? If you have a sad life until age 18, that is age 18--NOT your whole life. And I can tell you 14 children, right off the bat, who are adopted happily, and some/many are from third world countries. Undiscovered Universe, if a kid's parents can't or won't take care of them properly (and that includes not making them think they're a burden or unwanted), then they should put it up for adoption. (As a baby, of course, what 10-year-old wants to told they're being gotten rid of?) Or, even better, not gotten pregnant in the first place. (And I'm advocating abstinence, not drugs here.)The child is only "yours" in the sense that they've been entrusted to your care, they're not a pet or a baby doll. I can't think of a single circumstance in which it would be acceptable for a parent to kill their child. Can you?Sorry if I'm rambling, but the point is that it's NOT their choice. The child is NOT their property. That mentality also advocates arranged marriages, parents choosing their children's jobs, colleges, etc., and even being allowed to sell their children. Sorry for the confusion.And, while I see the anti-choice side of the argument, I have to respond. All humans are humans, and it's NOT OK NOT TO LOVE YOUR KID. But, in the sad, sad, sad, sad world we live in, we have parents who don't. Or parents that would be forced to marry or something if they had a kid. My point is, the kid would not be a happy kid, and the parents life would be ruined. It's not only the kids life that matters. What happened to everyone's equal. There's a young adult novel called "Unwind" about a possible future if the abortion question goes a certain way. I don't think that book will ever happen in real life, and I'm glad because it's a kind of freaky and depressing book!! But some of you might want to read it if you want other thoughts to think about the abortion issue.(This cupcake thinks abortion is a necessary evil, and hopes that someday the human race will have "got it together" enough that it will no longer be necessary.)
nellie: about 18 not being your whole life: that's quite true, but I think people are most impressionable in the earlier years of their life. For instance, if someone had a horrible experience when she/he was really young, that person is likely to have problems later in life. Or fear whatever was involved in the experience.one more thing about abortion: what if a woman was raped? should she have to raise that child?
I think that if the woman doesn't feel up to raising the child, and I bet I wouldn't, then she can put him/her up for adoption. I know that life could be really hard for the child as well as for the mother, but I don't think it's ever acceptable for a mother to kill her child. Ever.

Oh, and when the fetus is aborted, it is not a baby. It is a fetus. Fetuses cannot feel pain up to a certain point, at which I believe they are given anesthetics.
A fetus is a medical term for a baby in a certain stage of his or her development. Would you say, "Hazel, you're not a person, you're teenager"? Of course not. Just because someone's not crying doesn't mean they're not a person.And giving someone anesthetics before killing them? That's a way of convincing yourself it's OK.
The Abortion issue is simple. Whether one is opposed to it or not depends on when one believes life begins. Is it conception? When the fetus is viable outside of the womb? Birth? There are lots of different opinions. What one chooses to believe is more often than not a matter of one's RELIGIOUS beliefs. And that's great. Everyone is entitled to her beliefs. But the founding fathers of this country made if perfectly clear that religious beliefs have no place in American government. So while it's fine for a person to believe abortion is wrong, she has no right in this country to impose those religious beliefs on her fellow citizens.
Well, first of all, it's not just about when life begins, because there ARE situations when it's all right to kill a living person, such as a just war. It only matters when life begins, because, obviously, these people are innocent.Second of all, it's not just about religion. It's about respecting human dignity, which is the duty of every person on this entire planet.And if it were just about religion, the pro-life people would also have a right not to be subjected to the religious views of pro-"choice" people. The Catholic Church is against rape. Does that mean it should be allowed, to keep church and state separate? Of course not!Also, "they can't feel it" makes no sense, because that means it's OK to kill people in their sleep, kill people who are in comas, kill people who are under anesthetic. And that's wrong.I'm not trying to judge you people personally, but I think a lot (not all!) of pro-abortion people really aren't comfortable with what they're doing/advocating, which leads to all these euphemisms. "Choice," "women's health" and so on. They don't want to admit what they're doing, not to others, not to the general public, and not to themselves. But they want to keep doing it, because they're selfish. They know it's wrong, deep down inside, but they won't admit it. If you really want to address an issue, you have to be honest about it.
I agree with Jin ai on the abortion issue. I'm so happy that Obama won, but I'm sad that prop 8 in California passed. ALL people should be treated equally.
Before stating my opinion on the abortion and gay rights issues, I would like to say that I am glad everyone is informing themselves and has their own opinion so they are not like, "Ummm....I like Barack Obama.....because my friend does." Or whatever. Yay!I am sooooo glad Obama won! His speech gave me goosebumps!On abortion: I personally am in the middle. I get the whole "It's the mother's choice" but I also understand the side of "You are killing innocent babies!" At some point in the pregnancy, we have to decide when the baby is a person. If we make abortion illegal, what will happen to the mothers who get abortions anyways? What methods would they use? Would the methods be safe for the mother? Also, why do we think killing convicted prisoners is ok while killing fetuses/babies is wrong? Are both wrong? Or is capital punishment ok when the prisoner has killed a person or some people? Either way, you are taking a person's life off Earth forever. I am undecided on abortion. But if I was to get pregnant in high school, I would probably put the baby up for adoption.Switching topics, I think gay marriage is ok! I agree that the gay/lesbian couples should have all the rights that "legal" married couples have, and even if they are not accepted in churches, they should TOTALLY have the law on their side!That is my word in this ongoing debate. :] Thank you for listening!

The unborn baby--or fetus--or whatever you want to call the thing in the woman's womb--is a living human, and she/he is innocent. They have original sin, yes, but they do not know the difference between right and wrong, and so they cannot sin, and so they are innocent. It is never okay to end an innocent human life.
The difference between capital punishment and abortion is innocence. I think that in countries like the U.S. where we actually have a decent jail system, capital punishment is unnecessary, but it makes sense in countries where anyone in jail can bribe their way out in two months, extremely evil murderers and terrorists and so on. I think you should avoid it where you can, because they are people, and to give the person a chance to repent and so on.But unborn babies have never done anything wrong in their whole entire lives. That's the difference.What really galls me is what a big deal people make about whales and so on, when thousands of American children are murdered in cold blood, every single day. Priorities, people!
I was for McCain. I really feel that was Obama has said and things he has done and things he is for are not right for this country. But I cannot do anything about it and I guess he is now just a president.
