The Montauk Monster

I've been sitting on this post for a few days now. 'Cause to be honest, it's pretty gross. But as an amateur cryptozoologist, I feel it's my duty to report the facts. However, out of respect for our more sensitive readers, I won't post a picture. You can choose whether you're up for it or not.

A while back, several people photographed a dead creature that had washed ashore on Montauk beach in New York. Weeks later, no one has figured out what, exactly, it was. Some say the photos show the carcass of a dog. Others say raccoon. But there's a little problem. Pictures of the creature seem to show that it had a muscular body, fur, large fangs . . . and a beak.

Many have speculated that the creature escaped from a nearby animal testing facility. What do YOU think?

See a video here, and read more here. (Consider yourself warned.)

  1. Pardon me while I go and have a nightmare! :(
That picture was pretty obviously not ordinary... but if I didn't know better, I would say that it looks a LOT like a seaturtle without its shell although its back would look a lot less smooth. It's hands/feet/whatever the heck they are look webbed like it is a sea animal... DEFINITELY NO RACCOON!

  2. its a turtle. the shell must have gotten ripped off somehow and as a result of that, it died. or maybe its a turtle that was born without a shell, or a really weak shell, because it origionated in a polluted
    bit of water.

  3. I think it's gross.

  4. I agree that it does look like a turtle without its shell. Poor thing it probably had the shell tourn of or something. I wonder what killed it.

  5. I looked at the picture and it is really gross and REALLY weird ,but cool. It might be a sheless turtle. It is still cool.

  6. Either it's nothing real and someone just got a little photo shop happy, or it's a mutated turtle without a shell. But it is not a raccoon and it is not a dog.

  7. I would call it some weird unknown species. It doesn't look like a turtle to me, or a dog, or a raccoon. But it is rather disgusting.

  9. But it said it had hair, didn't it? And anyway turtles' backbones are part of their shells, so they really can't come out, no matter what Franklin Is Scared Of The Dark may try to tell you.
    I am intruiged.

  10. And if it's a dead pit bull, trust me, pit bull teeth are no joke. I, too, hope that thing's mother is not around.

  14. SWEET! And yet... I pity the monster and the mother that lost it.

  15. Aaarg! Where did the body end up?! Do you know how many reports there are of "we found a mysterious body but it vanished before dna tests could be made"? Lots! In my cryptozoology books, I mean. In other places, probably not so many.

I don't know what it is either, it does look a bit turtle-ish, but also a bit rodent-ish around the legs. Maybe a cavy or capybara with mange? How one of those ended up in North America would be a mystery in itself.

  16. BTW, I got a new pic for my account!!!

  17. I think it's mother is lucky to have lost it, quite frankly. If I swam into that, I think I'd need therapy and still be traumatized for life.

  18. Um... I think someone sewed it up different animal parts. like the Fiji Mermaid

  19. Ok, to me that looks nothing like a dog, raccoon, or shell-less turtle. Turtles don't have fangs or hooves or long legs. Looks mildly like a wild boar...
It's funny cuz I am now reading the secong Jurassic Park where strange unidentifiable creatures are washing up on Costa Rican beaches....;)

  20. MinnieMouseLover: I don't know what it is. The fur you can see in one of the pictures would usually lead me to think it's a mammal and not a turtle. (Plus, I don't think turtles look quite so good without their shells.) But I googled raccoon skeletons, and I don't think that's the answer, either.

Most people think it's a dog. But even if you find a way to account for the "beak," the legs don't look like a dog's to me.

So I guess this is all to say that I'm pretty sure it's a . . . monster. (Or at least I'd LIKE to think so.)

  21. I agree with Ariana, when I first saw it I thought it was a stretched out chicken! XD
But really, why don't they do a DNA test on it?

  22. Whoops, I guess i found where my long lost dog ran off too...

  24. Hmmm.... well, that's something to think about.... I think it is a mutated turtle. (the poor thing!)

  25. Oh My God! that thing is gross. I also think it sort of looks like a Turtle without a shell but I dont know. Whatever it is, it's strange.

  26. In the picture it sorta looks plastic, dont you think? The head sorta looks like a mutant salmon...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Well, when they first discovered the platypus, a lot of people thought it was fraud. Why should this be?

    ReplyDelete
  28. oh my god! it looks like it has a relatively small head, so maybe the head was decomposed and it had a serious jaw problem, giving it the ;look of a beak.

OR MAYBE IT WAS AN AWESOME UP TILL NOW UNFOUND SPECIES!!!

    awesome!

ps: true, it looks somewhat like a turtle. i guess thats possible, but we didnt see the thing up close and in person, so maybe it doesnt look like a turtle at all in person.

hazel: a agree. turtles are not hairy.

    ReplyDelete
  29. maybe its a crippled dog thats back was severely burned by jellies and it had jaw problems, but it;s head got decomposed , giving it the small head and beak appearence.

    thats my new theory.

    ReplyDelete
  30. ooh! wait! new theory! it is a dog that had a parsitic twin and was cripple and then u all know the beak part of the theory.

  31. The body looks kind of like a pig, don't you think? It's front hands look kind of like a seal's. The head I think, is just roting.

  33. not a racoon... or a dog... or a bird... possibly bits of all three stitched together? or two? or some species that no one admits exists, like big foot?????? or it could possibly be some sick scientist's idea of an experiment... :(
