The Lesser Kiki?





The illustration shown above was the winner in a monster-drawing contest sponsored by the UK's Guardian newspaper. The creature depicted is known as the "Lesser Kiki." According to its creator, the beast "attaches itself to a banana tree and waits for a human/animal to pluck and eat one of the bananas on its back. When this happens, the creature’s energy is drained away for the rest of the day and cannot move. And another two bananas grow on its back."

Should we be offended? Flattered? Confused?

    Um...Whay is it called "the lesser Kiki"? I think that that is a pointless name. But, cool drawing! Watercolors, I presume.

    We should be flattered... and a little confused. WHY would someone name their brilliant drawing "The lesser Kiki"?

    The drawing is fantastic. But I'm really confused... about the name, and it's purpose.
    Kiki would be on the floor, howling with laughter, I presume.

    WEird! That is just maddening the unhelpful. Why the heck would they call it the lesser kiki? In my opion it kinda kooks like a hedgehog made out of bananas. No offense.

    Raph: Have you read any of the books in the Bartimaeus trilogy by Jonathan Stroud? The first book is called The Amulet of Samarkand. Fantasy--but GOOD fantasy.

    Also--not YA--have you read much Sherlock Holmes? It takes a little getting used to, but when you're hooked, you're hooked. (Love "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and "The Sign of the Four."

    I've read both choices - and loved both. ^^ Usually I don't like fantasy, but I really enjoyed Stroud's books.
    I actually read The Hound of the Baskervilles for school - how lucky was I? xD

    I had to read some Sherlock Holmes for school. Most of the class thought it was boring, but I loved it! I think it was called "The adventure of the speckled band." Or something like that!

    If you havent, you should read the "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Philip Pulman (I think thats the right last name, correct me if I'm wrong) It starts with the Golden Compass, if you haven't read it the book is better than the movie.

    anyways, why'd they name it the lesser kiki, it's not, like royal enough to be called that. LOL!!!!

    ok, competly off-topic but i just watched planet earth an it was AWESOME, did anyone else get it 4 xmas? i'v also read the bartimaeus trilog and it is incredibly funny in a frightening sort of way. may i reccomend so yesterday by scott westerfeld? it sound girly but is really not.

    I love Lemony Snicket books! They're sooooo good. What's ur favorite? Mine is probably the Grim Grotto and the Slippery Slope. I love them all, tho.

    Kad: I got your note about the Golden Compass and other Philip Pullman books. Believe me, you are not alone in your opinion! (That the books are anti-religion.) There are many other people on the blog who've said similar things. Take a look at the post for December 10th, and you'll see what I'm talking about. But as I said there, I think any young person who's smart enough to read the books is smart enough to avoid being "brainwashed." But never, ever worry about offending anyone here. Your opinon is very important to me!

    Well, obviously the little critter is called the "lesser Kiki" because we all know who the "greater Kiki" is.

    The Bartimaeus trilogy is the best. Lemony Snicket isn't half bad. The Books of Pellinor by (I think) Alison Croggon rocks my socks off. It's fantasy, but lifelike. Hard to describe.

    haven't read the golden compass, or sherlock holmes, or the series of unfourtinate events. I really don't read many of the more famous books. But I have read The Books of Pellinor actually im reading The Crow right now (it's the third book)
    Have any of you people read Chinese Cinderella and the Secret Dragon Society? I thought it was good, but that's just me.

    I recommend The Chronicles of Prydain, by Lloyd Alexander. But if you don't like LOTR, skip them. They're kinda copy-catty.
