Starting around Thanksgiving, Christmas ornaments began mysteriously appearing on the trees that line the Garden State Parkway, a busy highway in New Jersey. The first ornament to be spotted was a melon-sized red glass bulb. Over the next few weeks, more began to show up, each hung where passing motorists could admire it.
What has police baffled is the location of the unusual Christmas display. It's on a remote stretch of road that runs through the Pinelands--and there are no houses nearby. Someone must be stopping on the side of the road--probably in the middle of the night--and leaving the ornaments behind.
In my opinion, whoever's responsible has found the true holiday spirit. It shouldn't be about presents, but rather about bringing a little (random) joy to the world.

ReplyDeleteIt reminds my of another thing I read about in the newspaper a month or two ago. This lady runs a blog, and she's started this project where, every week, she places a hand-decorated matchbox somewhere in Sydney - like a train station, bus, etc. It's all about spreading random joy to people - and it went so far as to her receiving an email from someone in Paris, saying they had found it on the Metro.

ReplyDeleteWell obviously, it's the Jersey devil. *adjusts glasses, makes professorial voice* It is a little known fact that the cryptids of the world enjoy holiday spirit as much as their human neighbors. The Scottish media has suppressed photos of the famous Loch Ness monster bringing home presents for her tadpoles, and in America young Bigfeet go to the mall to see Santa, where they claim to be affected by hypertrychosis. (a syndrome that causes hairyness, and the name of which I probably misspelled) Even the feared giant squid was photographed using its long tentacles to hang ornaments in the rigging of ships. The cryptid holiday phenomena are not well studied, mostly because I just made this stuff up so there's nothing really to study.
