Fourteen-year-old Laura Dekker may soon be the youngest person to sail solo around the world! As many of you know, the Dutch government tried to prevent Laura from living her dream. (And let's be honest, it is pretty darn risky.) For months she was forced to live under the guardianship of Dutch child protective agencies. But now she's free, and her boat, the Guppy, set sail from Gibraltar on Saturday!
You can read more here, and FOLLOW THE GUPPY on its way around the world on Laura's website!
Bon voyage, Laura! The Irregulars are with you in spirit!
Thanks to everyone who sent me links and updates on Laura!

YAY! SHE MADE IT! Go, Laura, go! We'll be with you! :D
ReplyDeleteI wish I was that brave... I'm brave enough to go white water rafting, but I don't think I'd sail around the world.

ReplyDeletewhat about jessica watson? she tried to do the same thing. she was about 16, went all over the world, went through rough, wild seas & storms (i think the boat may have turn upside down at one point? i don't know all the details), and came back to be told that a) she hadn't sailed north far enough and b) she wasn't even old enough to break the record for being the youngest person to sail solo around the world (some kind of system we have here, hey?)
ReplyDeletei don't know the exact details. but this is what i remember hearing the media talking about at the time.
Yay! go laura
ReplyDeleteOhhh I made a post about this too :)
